10 Things You Should Know Before Purchasing or Adopting a New Puppy

10 Things You Should Know Before Purchasing or Adopting a New Puppy

1. Choose the right breed for you and your family - Do some research to find a breed that will fit well with your lifestyle and personality. There are many different types of dogs out there, so it's important to find one that will be a compatible match for you and your family.

2. Get your puppy from a reputable breeder or rescue organization - Make sure to do your homework when choosing where to get your new pup. Be sure to visit the facility and meet the staff to get a feel for their operation. Only adopt from a breeder or rescue organization that you feel comfortable with.

3. Socialize, socialize, socialize! - It's important to expose your puppy to as many different people, animals, and environments as possible in order to help them become well-rounded, confident dogs.

4. Start training early - It's never too early to start teaching your puppy basic obedience commands and good manners. The sooner you start, the better!

5. Be prepared for some challenges - Puppies are a lot of work! Be prepared for potty accidents, chewing, and other typical puppy behaviors. It takes patience and consistency to raise a well-behaved dog, but it is definitely worth it in the end.

6. Keep up with their health - Make sure to take your puppy to the vet for regular check-ups and vaccinations. Keep up with their flea/tick and heartworm prevention as well. A healthy pup is a happy pup!

7. Spay or neuter them - This is an important step in helping to reduce the homeless pet population. There are already too many animals in shelters waiting for homes, so do your part to help by spaying or neutering your new puppy.

8. Don't forget about exercise - Puppies need plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. Make sure to take them on walks, runs, or to the dog park often. Getting them plenty of exercise will also help tire them out so they can sleep through the night!

9. Be prepared to commit - Dogs are a lifetime commitment! They rely on you for their every need and will be a part of your family for many years to come. Be sure you are ready and willing to make that commitment before bringing a puppy home.

10. Have fun! - Puppies are a lot of work, but they are also a lot of fun! Enjoy your new furry friend and all the joys (and challenges) that come along with raising a puppy. They grow up fast, so savor every moment!
